A swipe of a finger across an X/Y pad can change melody and timbre at the same time. The Korg Kaossilator 2 is a battery-powered phrase synthesiser and loop recorder in pocket size: horizontal movement controls pitch, while vertical movement controls parameters such as filter, feedback or modulation, depending on the programme. Playing via the X/Y touchpad makes it suitable for spontaneous performances without a keyboard.

There are 150 synth, instrument and drum programmes available, including bass and chord sounds, acoustic sounds and effects. The PCM drums give drum programmes realistic sounds. With 35 scales, an adjustable key and a note range of ±12, you can limit melodies to suitable notes. The gate arpeggiator offers 50 patterns; gate time and swing can be adjusted.

The integrated loop recorder records phrases and allows overdubs with no fixed limit. Two separate loop banks can be used for DJ-style workflows, including muting and crossfading. This lets you build up several layers of sound and switch between the two loops.

For recording vocals, guitar or other external sources, there is a built-in microphone and a microphone input. Loops and recorded performances can be saved to a microSD or microSDHC card; SDXC cards are not supported. Format the memory card in the device before use. The OEL display shows the settings clearly, while the VALUE slider allows continuous parameter control.

A built-in speaker and operation with two AA batteries mean you can use the device without a fixed power supply. For monitoring, there is a headphone output with a stereo mini jack; the microphone input also uses a stereo mini jack. Operation in conjunction with KORG's iKaossilator for iPhone is also supported. Compact and battery-powered, the Kaossilator 2 is suited to mobile idea sketches, loop performances and DJ setups that call for touch control and two loop banks.
