Three 4×4 fields switch between clip control and velocity-sensitive drum pads depending on the operating mode. The ICON iStage is a compact USB-MIDI controller for DJ software and DAWs, allowing you to control clips, effects and drum sounds using the same interface. Three switchable 4×4 fields form the core of the controller.
In DJ mode, the 48 dual-colour illuminated buttons function as a 12×4 matrix for clip control; separate Play and Stop buttons provide additional access. In Effector mode, the button fields can be assigned to effect parameters. This lets you configure the assignments to suit the software you use and your workflow. Clip and effect control via a button matrix are what define the two modes.
DAW mode provides eight channels for controlling pan, volume, solo and mute. Another 16 buttons are provided for MMC and function commands; the integrated Mackie Control protocol supports DAW control. In Drummer mode, the three fields function as velocity-sensitive pads. DAW control with Mackie Control protocol is supported, as is playing drum parts.
Depending on the mode, an encoder handles functions such as jog-wheel control or fast scrolling. The freely assignable fader and 17 red-illuminated buttons round out the control surface. A two-digit LED display shows control information; you can change MIDI assignments using the included iMap software. Encoder and freely assignable fader give you additional controls for different tasks.
The controller is powered via USB and finished in black. The compatibility information given for the item covers Windows 7 and Mac OS X Snow Leopard. When planning a current Mac setup, bear in mind that the iMap software is 32-bit and does not run on macOS versions later than Mojave. Coloured aluminium covers are available as an option. USB power without a separate power supply keeps connection requirements to a minimum.
The iStage is suited to compact DJ and production setups where you want to combine clip or effect control, DAW commands and drum pads in a single controller. The key considerations are the four operating modes, the freely assignable controls and your computer’s compatibility with the required software. Four operating modes for DJ, effects, DAW and drums cover these different control tasks.
