When playing CDs in a rack, format compatibility is just as important as direct access to cue points, search functions and playback modes. The Gemini CDX-1210 is a 2U 19-inch CD/MP3 player for DJ setups and fixed installations. It plays audio CDs, CD-Rs and MP3 CDs and features a RAM buffer to help ensure uninterrupted playback when subject to vibrations.

The rubberised jog wheel with finger grooves can be used in three modes: for the scratch effect, cue search and pitch bend. In search mode, you can search forwards and backwards through tracks and set the cue point with frame accuracy in pause mode. The player also supports instant start and cue with preview; the search and skip buttons make it easier to navigate tracks.

For transitions and adjustments during playback, you have a pitch fader with ranges of ±4, ±8 and ±16 per cent, as well as pitch bend via the jog wheel or buttons. Momentary pitch bend goes up to ±16 per cent and returns to the set tempo when released. A reverse function plays the track backwards from the current position; Brake mode slows playback when you press the pause button.

Use Loop In and Loop Out to create a loop between two points. Reloop recalls it; triggering it repeatedly can create a stutter effect. According to the operating instructions, a brief pause may be audible the first time a loop plays; subsequent repeats run seamlessly. The player also offers programmable playlists and Repeat for the current track or the entire CD.

Playback can be set to Single or Continue mode: in Single mode, the player stops after one track; in Continue mode, the CD keeps playing and starts again from the beginning after the last track. The blue-backlit LCD displays MP3 text, track number, pitch and playback status, and time, among other information. Three time displays are available: elapsed track time, remaining track time and remaining CD time.

There is a 3.5 mm AUX input on the front for line sources such as MP3 players. When a plug is inserted, CD playback is muted and the AUX signal is sent to the rear outputs. The adjustable output volume affects the RCA and XLR outputs, which can both be used at the same time. The infrared remote control offers volume control, direct track selection and tap tempo, among other functions.

For DJ racks, mobile systems and installations with CD or MP3 CD playback, this model combines a rack format and pitch and cue controls with balanced XLR and RCA connections. This makes it suitable for setups where direct CD playback and classic rack mounting are required.
