Product description Focal Studiomonitor CMS40
When space is limited on the studio desk, a short listening distance matters: The Focal CMS 40 is a compact, active 2-way nearfield monitor for small control rooms, home studios and post-production. Its frequency response ranges from 60 Hz to 28 kHz; according to the product data, the maximum level is 97 dB SPL (peak at 1 m). It can also be used as a second reference system for checking mixes.
The 4-inch woofer with a Polyglass cone works together with an inverted aluminium/magnesium tweeter. Each driver is powered separately by a 25 W Class A/B amplifier. The reinforced, damped die-cast aluminium enclosure is internally magnetically shielded and finished with a black powder coating.
Controls for input sensitivity and volume, as well as LF and HF shelving, are provided for adapting the monitor to the source and room. The sensitivity can be set to +4 dBu, 0 or -10 dBV; the volume is adjustable from -66 to 0 dB. The LF correction operates in the 0 to 450 Hz range, while the HF correction covers 4.5 to 20 kHz; both offer settings of 0, -2 and +2 dB.
The monitor accepts balanced signals via XLR and unbalanced signals via RCA. The input impedances are 10 kΩ balanced and 47 kΩ unbalanced. A power LED and an audio clip LED indicate operating status and clipping. Power is supplied via an IEC socket; the power cable is detachable. A voltage selector and an on/off switch are also included.
Dimensions vary depending on the setup: with rubber feet, the enclosure is 238 mm high; with the decoupling desk stand, it is 243.2 mm high. According to the product description, the monitor can be used from a listening distance of around 40 cm, including near reflective surfaces. This makes the compact CMS 40 suitable for cramped workspaces, short listening distances and setups where a small second monitor is needed for reference listening.
