When several microphones and instruments need to be recorded or mixed live at the same time, the inputs, monitoring paths and computer connection all need to work together. The Edirol Digital M-16DX is a 16-channel digital mixer with a separate I/O module, USB audio interface and built-in DSP. The mixer and connections are split between two units, allowing the connection points to be placed closer to the stage when needed.

Four XLR inputs with microphone preamps and +48 V phantom power are available for microphones; inputs 1 and 2 also support high-impedance instrument signals. Additional sources can be connected via balanced jack inputs, RCA, and the extra jack and mini-jack inputs on the mixer. The separate arrangement of the mixer and I/O module allows the connections to be set up at the point of use and the control unit in an easily accessible location. The two modules are connected using the supplied 2 m cable.

For computer recording, the USB 2.0 interface transfers 18 channels for recording and two for playback. This allows the input signals and stereo main mix to be used as separate recording streams in a DAW; playback from the computer is two-channel and full duplex. The Finalize effects are not available when operating as a USB audio interface in 96 kHz mode.

The channel strips offer Low-Cut, Pan, Aux, Select, Solo/Mute and Level, as well as a adjustable 3-band EQ with adjustable mid frequency and Q. The graphic LCD display supports the settings. The stereo mix also has a 16-band graphic EQ and Room Acoustic Control: the built-in microphone captures the room acoustics so that speaker playback can be adjusted automatically.

The internal DSP includes COSM insert effects such as Power Compressor, Vocal Enhancer and Narration Enhancer, as well as echo and reverb variations. Enhancer, multiband compressor and limiter are available as Finalize effects. Scene memory recalls saved mixer settings; with system program version 2.0, up to 16 scenes and a DAW controller function are available.

Outputs include Main, Alt, two Aux Sends, 2-Track and Control Room, as well as a headphone output. Digital inputs and outputs are provided in optical and coaxial formats; there is also USB for connecting to a computer. Balanced main and monitor connections support connection to PA and studio equipment, while the separate Control Room output provides an independent monitoring path.

With 24-bit signal processing and selectable sample rates of 44.1, 48 or 96 kHz, the mixer handles live mixes and multitrack studio recordings. The control surface is modelled on an analogue mixer; rackmount adapters and rubber feet for the I/O module are listed as included accessories. The combination of 16 inputs, USB recording and separate modules suits setups where several sources need to be mixed and, when required, recorded individually in a DAW.
