The search for mobility and quality The Pioneer DDJ-400 with its recordbox system had been my reliable companion so far, but constantly setting up the setup with a laptop and speakers became increasingly annoying. Especially in a four-person household, it is difficult to find an undisturbed place. The search began for something more mobile that still offered solid software and features. The alternative: Numark Mixstream Go A first attempt led me to the Numark Mixstream Go, which was interesting for spontaneous performances at home with built-in speakers and a battery. However, I was missing a sophisticated loop section, which encouraged me to do further research. The decision: Denon DJ SC Live 2 The search finally led me to the Denon DJ SC Live 2. Although a little larger and more stable, I decided on a height-adjustable keyboard stand. The speakers were more powerful than the Mixstream, met my requirements optimally and the effects section offered more than sufficient options. Another plus point: The SC Live 2 is a true standalone device. The songs are analyzed directly and access to various streaming services is available. The Engine DJ software on PC/Mac also offers convenient organization options for your music collection. Continuous development and updates A decisive factor in my choice was the continuous development of the Denon DJ SC Live 2. Updates are easily imported via WLAN, which speaks for a future-proof investment. Unlike subscription systems, this is a full version and even activation of Serato Pro is possible. Comparison with the competition The price of around 900 euros for this powerful device compares to Pioneer models like the XDJ-RR at 1200 euros, without monitor boxes, streaming, on-board analysis, and in the subscription model. The Denon DJ SC Live 2 offers a cost-effective alternative with extensive functions. Usage Experience and Adjustment I initially missed the keys on my DDJ-400, but after two weeks of playing with the SC Live, I got used to the pressure point and feedback of the keys. The initial fears about the four missing pads also disappeared as the workflow with switching the second bank of the SC Live is simple and effective. Points of criticism and suggestions for improvement Of course there are some points that could be improved. The option of colored pads for better clarity would be desirable, although this is already shown on the display. The display of the waveform during loop editing could be optimized. The WLAN module doesn't seem to be the strongest, but a repeater can help here. An AUX input might be useful in the future. The beatgrid analysis could be improved, but is not a big problem thanks to quick manual adjustments directly on the device. Conclusion All in all, the Denon DJ SC Live 2 offers a powerful DJ experience at a fair price. The combination of standalone functionality, high-quality workmanship and continuous development makes it a first-class choice for DJs who value mobility and quality.
