AlphaTheta XDJ-AZ in the Review
The AlphaTheta XDJ-AZ is a high-quality 4-channel standalone DJ system that is compatible with both rekordbox and Serato DJ. After the renaming of Pioneer DJ to AlphaTheta, the manufacturer is making a strong statement for innovation and future-readiness.
The device is based on professional club equipment like the CDJ-3000 and the DJM-A9 and targets a broad audience: from ambitious hobby DJs to experienced professionals. Compared to its predecessor, the XDJ-XZ, not only were numerous weaknesses eliminated, but innovative features were also integrated, which should be of particular interest to demanding DJs.
We tested the XDJ-AZ in our lab and now give you all the information you need to know about the new flagship controller in the following review.
First Impressions and Setup
Visually, the new XDJ-AZ strongly resembles its predecessor, the XDJ-XZ. However, the most noticeable change is the improved touchscreen, which is not only brighter and more responsive but also displays significantly more information. The jogwheels have been upgraded to match the CDJ-3000 and impress with their large full format. Additionally, the spacing between the controls has been increased, making operation easier.
An interesting new feature is the SonicLink function, which, when used with the HDJ-F10 headphones, enables wireless DJing. The looping functions have been expanded, and the performance pads now offer additional modes, including Key Shift. This feature works perfectly with the new Key-Sync option across all standalone channels.
The setup is easy:
Music can be used either via USB sticks (preferably prepared with rekordbox), CloudDirectPlay, or Beatport streaming. To use with rekordbox or Serato, simply install the corresponding software and establish the connection. The DJ controller acts as a dongle and automatically unlocks all pro features in the software. The intuitive operation of the music browser is especially helpful, as the larger screen displays up to 13 tracks simultaneously.
The Controller and the New Features in Action
Touchscreen and User-Friendliness
The new touchscreen of the XDJ-AZ stands out significantly from its predecessor. It is not only brighter and offers a faster response time, but it also displays significantly more information at once. In addition to detailed waveforms for all four channels, key parameters like effects, loops, and the status of the performance pads are always visible. This provides a better overview and more efficient usage.
A particularly useful innovation is the "Mixer Settings" button. With a single click, DJs can access and adjust important settings like the crossfader assignment. This saves valuable time, especially during live performances where flexibility and quick adjustments are essential. The menus are clearly designed and allow for intuitive navigation, even for DJs who are less tech-savvy.
The performance pads have also been optimized: they are located directly under the jogwheels and provide access to new functions like Key Shift and extended loop options. The operation is smooth, and the additional visual display on the screen ensures that DJs can always keep track of their current actions.
Versatile Source Selection
The XDJ-AZ controller supports a wide variety of music sources. DJs can seamlessly switch between USB sticks, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and streaming services like Beatport. This flexibility is especially advantageous for professional DJs who use different setups.
A highlight is the new Link-Cue function, which allows you to preview tracks directly via the screen. By simply tapping on the waveform, you can preview tracks in the headphones without having to load them into the main playback. This greatly simplifies the preparation of transitions and makes the system even more intuitive.
For streaming enthusiasts, the device offers extended possibilities. In addition to Beatport integration, the XDJ-AZ features the CloudDirectPlay function, which allows music from Dropbox libraries to be played directly. Although signing in to Beatport is required each time it is started, this function provides significant value for DJs who increasingly organize their music libraries in the cloud.
Sound Quality and Performance
The new AlphaTheta controller impresses with its outstanding sound quality. This is thanks to the improved 32-bit ESS digital-to-analog converter, which ensures crystal-clear audio output. Whether it's deep bass, precise mids, or brilliant highs – the sound remains balanced and detailed across all frequency ranges.
In practice, the device impresses with its fast response time. Functions like hot cues, loops, or effects are executed without delay, which is especially advantageous during more complex performances. Even with intense usage, the system remains stable and shows no signs of overload.
Another feature is the Gate-Cue function, which is available as a pad mode on this system. It allows for a more dynamic use of cue points and brings a creative approach to the performance. This combination of sound quality and technical performance makes the XDJ-AZ a reliable partner for DJs who rely on professional results.
Weaknesses and Areas for Improvement
Although the AlphaTheta XDJ-AZ has many strengths, there are still some aspects that leave room for improvement. One key point of criticism is the lack of an integrated SonicLink output for wireless speakers. Considering that this technology is already successfully used in the HDJ-F10 headphones, this decision seems difficult to understand. A SonicLink output would have made the device even more versatile and greatly facilitated the use of wireless speakers, especially the proprietary Wave Eight speakers.
Additionally, the Ethernet hub has been reduced to one single port. This means that DJs who want to connect multiple devices via Pro DJ Link will need to rely on external Ethernet hubs. While such a hub is inexpensive and easy to obtain, it could create unnecessary complexity in certain setups.
Another issue concerns the number of analog inputs. While the predecessor XDJ-XZ offered four external inputs, the XDJ-AZ only has two. This could be a limitation, especially for DJs who want to integrate traditional players like turntables or CD players into their setup. However, this reduction may reflect the focus on digital and wireless sources, which may be sufficient for many modern DJs.
Finally, a better integration of streaming services would be desirable. Although the support for Beatport is a big step forward, the requirement to log in again each time the device is restarted is seen as unnecessarily cumbersome. Permanent storage of login credentials could significantly improve user-friendliness. A broader selection of streaming services would also be beneficial to cater to the individual preferences of DJs.

The AlphaTheta XDJ-AZ represents a significant step forward in the development of standalone DJ systems. It combines the strengths of the predecessor XDJ-XZ with new, forward-thinking features and targets both hobby DJs and professionals looking for a powerful and versatile tool. The improved touchscreen stands out, offering increased brightness, faster response time, and more information display, providing real added value. The intuitive user interface, combined with expanded functions like Key Shift and Link Cue, makes the system easy to operate and efficient.
The seamless integration of various music sources, from USB to Wi-Fi and streaming services like Beatport, offers plenty of options for all DJs who perform digitally. With the CloudDirectPlay function and broad compatibility with Rekordbox and Serato, the device demonstrates flexibility that meets modern demands. The sound quality is also impressive, thanks to the 32-bit ESS digital-to-analog converter that ensures a balanced and detailed sound image.
Despite its many advantages, there are a few minor drawbacks. The reduced number of analog inputs and the lack of an integrated Ethernet hub could be disadvantages for DJs who prefer more complex setups. A more comprehensive integration of additional streaming services would also be desirable to better meet the individual needs of all DJs.
However, for DJs looking for a future-proof all-in-one system that is suitable for both club performances and studio applications, the XDJ-AZ remains an excellent choice. The combination of modern technology, thoughtful design, and professional features makes this device a strong controller for any performance.
