For clip-based performances in Ableton Live, direct access to clips, tracks and mixer parameters is essential. The Akai APC40 combines a 40-button clip matrix with knobs and faders designed for Live. You can control the software via USB without having to assign the controls yourself first.
The clip matrix indicates clip status using differently coloured LEDs: you can see which clips are loaded, playing or currently being recorded. Because Live sends feedback to the controller, you can read important status information directly on the device during a performance. The matrix can be shifted and scrolled, allowing you to access clip slots beyond the displayed 40-slot section.
Two banks of eight knobs each are available for mixer and track parameters. The Global knobs access Main Sends, pan and other parameters. The Track knobs are dynamically assigned to the selected track and control its parameters; their assignments adapt when you switch tracks. This gives you access to up to 72 track parameters via the knobs. LED rings indicate the respective values.
Bus and channel faders, along with a replaceable crossfader, are used to control levels. Other controls handle Tap Tempo, Tempo Nudge, Record Enable and Solo/Cue. You can connect additional switches via two assignable footswitch inputs. The buttons and knobs can be assigned individually if required, allowing you to adapt the controller to your own performance workflow.
The metal housing with non-slip rubber elements is designed for use on stage and in the studio. It connects to the computer via USB; the controller is specified for Mac and PC. A special version of Ableton Live Lite is listed as included software. For users of the full version, the product also mentions a free update patch that enables the APC40 functions.
The APC40 is suitable for live performances and studio work with Ableton Live if you want to control clips, mixer levels and track parameters directly from a controller. Its integrated assignments, visual clip feedback and individually assignable controls determine whether it suits your existing Live setup.
