Directly driven turntables

dj plattenspieler mit direktantriebTurntables have been around for decades and are standard equipment in many living rooms. A turntable is a must not only for DJs, but also for music lovers who want to listen to their favourite music on vinyl. In fact, a real trend has emerged in recent years. Direct drive models in particular are particularly popular. We will show you how they work and what you should pay attention to when buying.

The turntable in general - structure and functionality

A record is a so called analogue sound carrier made of vinyl with grooves on both sides. These grooves are "read"by an electrical or mechanical pickup, which is done by means of a special diamond needle at the tip.

The pick-up then converts the vibrations recorded by it into electrical voltage and amplifies them. The sound is output via a sound converter and a loudspeaker. Many music lovers appreciate the full, warm sound of a record and therefore prefer classic turntables to modern hi-fi systems.

What distinguishes the turntable with direct drive?

In principle, a turntable with direct drive is one of the two common types of drive that can be found in the equipment available on the market. The other variant is the so-called belt drive, in which the axis rotation originating from the motor is transferred to the turntable by means of a belt. This belt is usually made of rubber, so that it provides good friction in the corresponding areas.

The turntable with direct drive, on the other hand, has a slightly different structure: here the drive axle of the motor in the device also represents the turntable axis. This means that if the turntable speed changes, the motor will continue to run automatically at the same speed, as the electromagnets installed in the motor act directly on the turntable.

DJs in particular like to use turntables with direct drive very much, which of course has one reason: They react very quickly and reach the nominal speed in the shortest time. Comparing the characteristics of a turntable with a direct drive with those of a belt drive almost always shows that direct drive is the better choice.

What are the disadvantages of the direct drive?

A disadvantage of the drive concept is that production is carried out in smaller quantities by numerous manufacturers than is the case for devices with belt drive. This is because the production is hardly profitable for many suppliers, because the price would be too expensive for the end customer. All in all, for the end customer, belt-driven turntables are clearly the cheaper solution, but in view of the numerous advantages of direct drive, real music connoisseurs and DJs usually like to spend more money on such a device.

What should I pay attention to when buying a turntable with direct drive?

If you want to buy a turntable direct drive, it is important to choose a high quality model. Unfortunately, there are sometimes big differences between the devices available on the market: Inferior turntables with a powerful motor can, for example, severely impair the overall running characteristics of the turntable. The consequences are jerking or noise when playing a record. The PLL regulation can be of great help in this context to stabilize the turntable.
So if you want to buy a model with direct drive, make sure that the device is made of high quality materials and solid materials. A very good choice is a turntable equipped with a DC motor.

A comparison of different turntables is worthwhile

Playing records at home has a lot to do with enjoyment for many people. A hint of nostalgia, the gentle crackling of the needle and the warm sound are reason enough for music lovers to buy their own turntables.
However, it is important not to choose any model when buying, but to pay attention to quality and good performance. A comparison of the different devices on the market can be a great help here.
No matter what the final decision is: a turntable with direct drive is an investment that always pays off if you want to enjoy perfect sound at home or if you want to play records.
