DJ Headphones - An Overview

DJ Kopfhörer von SennheiserYou are just beginning your DJ career and want to know what to look out for when buying a DJ headphone?
Since it is often hectic in everyday DJ life, a robust construction is high on the list of criteria.

Sound quality

Good sound quality, often a bit bass, but with clear treble and warm mids, is one of the most important criteria when buying a DJ headphone. However, especially with the somewhat cheaper models, it is to be expected that the sound quality will be overdriven at a certain volume and is therefore no longer optimal. The Zomo HD-500, for example, shows that there are other ways to do it, and despite their very reasonable price, they can score with an astonishing playback quality.

But even the design is decisive for the quality of the sound, as one quickly notices in practice. Open headphones are naturally less shielded than closed headphones, which is also reflected in the sound.
Closed DJ headphones convince by their very high shielding. This gives them practically integrated sound insulation. Since the headphones usually have to work in very noisy environments, they also need this strong shielding.

Wearing comfort

As usual, wearing comfort is a matter of personal taste. The ear cups with optimal padding and well-fitting headband also contribute to good wearing comfort. The headphones must not be too tight, as this would also have a negative effect on wearing comfort. Good models can therefore be adjusted and variably adjusted to your own head size and shape.

The weight also plays a decisive role, whether the headphones can be worn well in long sessions, or whether they become uncomfortable or even painful over time.

Range of application and advantages of DJ headphones

DJ headphones are designed to provide a generally good sound. Most of the time the bass is a bit over-emphasized and the midrange is optimized, giving the impression that the sound is particularly good. Unlike studio headphone pendants, however, DJs do not need a linear and detailed sound image, but must generally be able to mix with it at high volumes. It therefore makes sense to increase the frequencies mentioned accordingly, as experience shows that they are "swallowed" during live operation.

In order for anything to be heard in a discotheque or club, DJ headphones need to provide good shielding from outside noise. In addition to the design, the upholstery also plays a major role here. Tight-fitting ear cups made of good material reliably minimize noise.
Thus, the padding of DJ headphones not only provides a high level of comfort, but also benefits the sound image.
